Saturday Club #1
Update 8.30 AM: -3 in Bathurst There is 3 to 4 inches of white stuff on the ground this morning. It was preceded by 10 mm of rain yesterday so the bottom layer is very wet. Just got word from Rogers Lake that they got the same. Also got word that there are already a dozen trucks pulled in and sleds are on the move to Mt Carleton and the Christmas Mountains. The bare spots on Piston Alley will not be an issue for this weekend. 4 AM Post We have had about 10 strait days of positive temperatures. This means we’ve had severe melting of water crossings, bogs, Beaver ponds, etc. These areas have already broken through, are ready to break through or are covered with surface water. Then add a day or so of rain and it is not good at these crossings plus add 20 cm of snow to all of this to camouflage these areas and you have a great recipe for getting stuck.
Trails are closed from Bathurst West & East and are only for extreme hard core only. Trail 23 leaving the Nepisiguit Lodge is hampered by a huge hole in the beaver dam 5 Km out, but crossable for hard core. The Head Pond at Nepisiguit has been covered with water for the last week, with no one crossing since last Saturday.
Anyone wishing to venture beyond the Lodge can do so starting at Nine Mile East Road on Trail 23 or motor up to Rogers Lake. Piston Alley was really patchy as of this past Wednesday. If you don’t mind running through patches of gravel, then it should not be a problem.
